Better late than never, right? So sorry about the super short notice, but come to this event if you can. We’ll be there!

The Central Iowa Celiac Connection (CICC) is hosting their annual holiday gluten-free potluck TODAY at 11:30 a.m. (yeah, I know, two hours from now…), at the Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines (though not a church sponsored event).

Here are more details from the reminder email I received:

Hi to all our gluten free friends!

I’m sending this reminder so you don’t forget our HOLIDAY POTLUCK, Saturday, November 13th, 11:30 am at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines.  As has been the tradition, we will provide the turkey and gravy.  You can choose to bring sides, salads or desserts for this holiday event.  I’ve had 7 people willing to make mashed potatoes!

We will have a huge number of samples of new products(including Sam and Louie’s New York Style Pizza), as well as gift baskets and many other give-aways so you don’t want to miss this holiday feast!!!

Do any of you have books on celiac disease or gluten free cookbooks that you no longer use?  If you do could you bring them to the potluck.  We are trying to pool our resources for newly diagnosed celiacs.   This would be very helpful to them if they could borrow the books.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our holiday potluck on November 13!

Which Central Iowa Hy-Vee Stores Are Hosting Celiac Awareness Month Events? These Ones!

You may or may not know that October is celiac awareness month. According to the Celiac Sprue Association, this has been the case since 1987 in the U.S. and Canada, and a few of the Des Moines area Hy-Vee stores are hosting gluten=free events starting tomorrow!

Saturday, Oct. 9, 10-4pm: Windsor Heights Hy-Vee, 7101 University Ave, Windsor Heights, IA

A gluten free open house October 9, 10-4pm. There will be new products and tastings. They have expanded their space for gluten free items. Shop at the Windsor Heights Hy-Vee HealthMarket and receive 10% off on Saturday October 9th and Sunday October 10th.  No registration is required.

Tuesday, Oct. 12, 4-6pm: Ankeny Hy-Vee, 410 N. Ankeny Blvd., Ankeny, IA

Gluten-free come-and-go event on Tuesday, October 12th from 4-6:00 p.m. in the Ankeny HealthMarket. An event to celebrate our amazing celiac customers. — Jenny Norgaard, RD LD, Ankeny Hy-Vee Dietitian.

Wednesday, Oct. 13, 12-5pm: Fleur Drive Hy-Vee, 4605 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA

Gluten-Free Extravaganza on Wednesday, Oct 13th from 12-5 p.m.  We will be sampling new foods as well as doing cooking demos.  It will be in our clubroom.  No registration is required.  – Anne Cundiff RD, LD.

Tuesday, Oct. 19, 3-7pm: Mills Civic Hy-Vee, 555 S. 51st St, West Des Moines, IA 50265

Cost: Free;  Gluten-free come-and-go event in the HealthMarket.  In honor of National Celiac Awareness Month, they are showcasing their best and newest Gluten-Free products.  Have you always wondered what something tastes like? Come and try a variety of gluten-free products, receive recipes and ideas for gluten-free holiday entertaining and talk with your Mills Civic Hy-Vee dietitian and HealthMarket manager. Register to win door prizes and receive 10% off gluten-free HealthMarket items!  They’ll be taking product requests and having giveaways as well.  No registration required.  Questions? In the latest newsletter from the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness they mentioned having an updated gluten-free candy list, as of October 2010….so now. This could come in handy for those moments when you’re just not sure. Of course, there are the appropriate disclaimers.

Check this out, it’s so cool. I wish I was able to attend!

If you are in the Central Iowa area and interested in getting some more tips on gluten-free cooking and the ever-so-difficult gluten-free baking, I’d recommend trying out ISU’s GF cooking and baking workshop. It starts tonight, so hurry!

I’ve stolen some of the details from the course page, where you can register for the workshop. It is once a week, on Mondays, tonight through October 11:
